About San Diego CA

The climate in San Diego is ideal during the four seasons. Which makes it ideal to visit anytime here. The winter season (December, January and February with an average daily high temperature below 67°F with an average low of 51°F. The spring season (March, April and May) with an average daily high temperature below 69°F with an average low of 60°F. The summer season June, July and August) with an average daily high temperature below 77°F with an average low of 67°F. The fall season (September, October and November) with an average daily high temperature below 74°F with an average low of 66°F.

Whenever the season, Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall there is always something to see and do here. T shirts, shorts, jeans, flip flops, sandals, a hat are usually the norm and are acceptable in San Diego as this place has a laid back atmosphere. Don't forget to pack your Sunday best outfit if you are going somewhere fancy.

If you are staying for a seven day trip or less, I would suggest as a rule of thumb to bring a light jacket, sweater or hoodie for the cool mornings and nights. In the mornings you might experience a marine layer (I call it fog) which will keep temperatures cool until the sun burns it off.

Bring plenty of lotions and moisturizers as the air can be very dry here if you have sensitive skin. You should always have plenty of sunscreen especially during the day even if it is a hazy day as the sun can be very strong.

Another excellent resource is San Diego's Official Site (www.san.org) to download as pocket size information on your smartphone. This will give you the most up to date on major annual events that happen in San Diego.

The San Diego International Airport formerly known as Lindbergh Field

Airport is the main airport. It has one single runway airport and planes fly in and out on this one runway every 90 seconds! Now that's impressive.

Flying into San Diego is beautiful and picturesque depending on which side of the plane you are sitting at. You will either get a closeup view of skyscrapers, the baseball stadium Petco Park, the San Diego Bay, the San Diego Coronado Bridge, or Balboa Park that can be seen on the other side.

Once you land and find your luggage at the baggage claim, check the signs for either ride share services (UBER or LYFT, the most popular, taxis or the free shuttle from the San Diego International Airport operates 24 hours 7 days a week to the Consolidated Rental Car Center where all drop-offs and pickups are conveniently located in one place. There are over 12 rental car agencies open 24 hours.

I suggest getting a local map of the area there usually free if you are going to drive around San Diego, my advice is to get a car that has GPS or your smartphone and download a map of San Diego area before you go on the road but bring your patients as some of the freeways here have heavy traffic and can be a complete turnoff especially during rush hour (morning 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.) and (evening 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.).

Interstate 5, 805 and the 15 runs a north-south route through the coastal communities from Orange County in the north to the Mexican border. Interstate 8 runs an east-west route through the coastal communities from Sunset Cliffs (Ocean Beach) in the west to Casa Grande, Arizona. The Routes 163, 52, and 94 serve as connectors.

There are four other forms of public transportation as an option to getting around town:

The Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) bus Route 992 goes to and from the airport terminals 1 and 2 which stops right outside the baggage claim area from 4:50 a.m. to 11:58 p.m. with buses arriving every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends and holidays. Route 992 connects with all the three transit options train, trolley and bus stations in Downtown San Diego:

Santa Fe Transit Center stations (Santa Fe Depot and America Plaza Station) that serve Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, Coaster, the Blue Line and Green Line of the San Diego Trolley and Rapid buses.

The City College Transit Center serves the Blue Line and Orange Line of the San Diego Trolley, and Rapid buses.

One way fares are $2.50. During the summer months the fare is free from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Metropolitan Transit System bus Route 923: operates between Ocean Beach and just outside the airport on North Harbor Drive operating hours from 5:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with buses arriving every 30 minutes. On weekdays, buses extend into Downtown San Diego.

From the airport terminals 1 and 2 shuttle buses serving the rental car center make a stop at the corner of Admiral Boland Way and West Palm

Street, one block (about 900 feet (270m)) from the Middletown station.

The shuttle buses operate between Old Town Transit Center, Terminal 1, Terminal 2 East, and Terminal 2 West with buses arriving every 20 to 30 minutes. At Old Town Transit Center passengers can transfer to Amtrak Surfliner, Coaster, along with Blue Line and Green Line trains of the San Diego Trolley.

Once at these stations you can purchase tickets at the courtesy desks, kiosk stations or online to your final destinations.

Where to stay? There are many hotels, motels, hostels, bed and breakfast places in the area. Depending on which month you plan on going the prices will vary due to numerous events that happen in San Diego throughout the year. Check San Diego Calendar of Events in (www.sandiego.org).

When it comes to beaches, San Diego is the place to be for mile to mile of beautiful coastline. The beaches are wide, easily accessible to the public and are within the city limits. It is a sun and star gazing, swimmers, sun worshiper, surfer, boogie boarder's paradise.

This is actually a park and recreation area not on the ocean. It is the largest aquatic park in the country! It spans 27 miles of shoreline and is 4,235 acres equal parts of land and water. It has 19 sandy beaches with 8 locations that are designated swimming areas. There is a spot on the west end for water sports like water skiing, kayaking, and windsurfing. The popularity of this beach is it is in the center between South Mission Beach and Pacific Beach and is also adjacent to Belmont Park which is an amusement park. Ocean Beach

This is the main beach in Ocean Beach (also known as OB) is the smallest. This beach is popular because of the Ocean Beach Pier that expands a half a mile out to the pacific ocean. Many visitors love to walk this stretch of the pier to see the waves break underneath and to watch the experienced surfers ride the waves in between the pylons. If you walk all the way to the end you will see lots of people fishing off this pier. There is one restaurant on the pier and the views from there are breathtaking and when you turn around you will see the magnificent city view.

Pacific Beach

The locals call this beach PB and it is a relaxed neighborhood by the beach with a boardwalk that is three miles long. There are designated lifeguards here as well. This is called the jewel of San Diego. This is a mile long of beaches, cliffs, reefs and coves. It is a favorite for active beach goers who love to snorkel, kayak, and scuba dive around the cove. You will see an abundance of marine life such as the seals and sea lions that basked on the rocks along the shores, and tiger sharks swimming in the ocean.

Shelter Island

This island/beach is a best kept secret in San Diego. You can walk on the pier, picnic, fish and have bonfires at designated spots. It's actually not an island at all but a 1.2 miles of man made creation that was a sandbank only visible during low tide. It was built up and dredged by the materials from the San Diego Bay. It is across the San Diego Bay where there is the naval military base which housed the Naval Information Warfare Training Group, North Island Naval Air station, the airstrip for the Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron, and the San Diego Naval Supply Center.
